United Students
United Students is dedicated to empowering and developing the leadership of young people through education, culture, and youth organizing training.
Coordinating Committee (CC)
Modeled after the "Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee" (SNCC), the CC represents the collective leadership of student leaders from the 4 Eastside high schools who meet weekly afterschool. The Coordinating Committee meetings develop students' public speaking skills, outreach skills, negotiation ability, facilitation capacity, and provide political education.
Strike School
Strike School is a 12 week seminar provided to United Students for the purpose of developing youth consciousness through political education on major economic and social justice issues that are not usually outlined in the traditional school curriculum. Through an Educational Justice Framework, Strike School also provides a space for students to dialogue and develop an understanding of the intersections between race, class, gender, immigration and sexual orientation issues in society and in their everyday lives.
Media Collective
Media Collective is a 12 week seminar provided to United Students CC members. Through a series of workshops, students are given background information to the role and history of the mainstream media and how mass communications can be used as a vehicle for social change. At the end of the seminar, students are trained to create short documentaries about an issue impacting their schools.
After-School Workshop's
United Students conducts after-school workshops two times a school year in order to engage, inform, and dialogue with the larger student body. The purpose of the afterschool workshops are to inform students on current issues, campus campaigns, and serves as a training ground for the "CC" to implement outreach, recruitment and facilitation skills.
Educational Justice Week
Educational Justice Week is organized to promote college awareness, educational justice, and community change. It is a week-long event with interactive workshops which were designed by youth in order to be accessible, relevant, and visual and to emphasize the important role that students play in improving academic achievement.
